Rugged computers for field scientists

Field computers are used all over the globe. Here, a research from the University of Lethbridge uses a Recon 400 and "Monkey Mapper" software developed by Walcott Scientific to monitor monkeys in South Africa.

Welcome to Walcott Scientific, your resource for rugged equipment for field scientists. As field scientists ourselves, we understand the needs of college teachers and researchers. We comb the market for the products that are the most useful and economic for our demanding field work.

We hope you find what you need! If you have additional questions about what it means to be rugged or which model computer to buy, have a look at our resources page.

Do you need a rugged computer?

Deciding whether or not to purchase a rugged computer is a major decision. Who needs one of these computers and why? When we made the choice to invest in a ToughBook, we did so for several reasons. First, our field research reached the point where we needed to have a large volume of data (photographs, diagrams, geochemical data, field notes, maps, stratigraphic columns, etc.) accessible in the field and we needed a computer that could stand up to the elements.

In the past, this meant carrying a case with many copied documents. Second, we began to rely more on GPS receivers for locating key positions and mapping contacts. Third, we felt that we could use the computer with software as a relatively inexpensive means to expose our students to 'cutting-edge' technology. We were so pleased with the performance and options afforded by the ToughBook that we pursued becoming a reseller ourselves!

As our own usuage evolves, we have added more products to what we use. Although the Panasonic computers work well with GIS, we have been very pleased with National Geographic TOPO! and also DeLorme products for providing base maps. Currently, we are investigating different options for in-field digital photography.
