No field computer would be complete without digital maps. There are a variety of map options available. We continue to evaluate products and can make suggestions based on your needs. Currently, we run National Geographic TOPO! on our field computers and have been very pleased with the detailed 1:24,000 coverage.

National Geographic TOPO! Series. Our favorite! Features five seamless layers of the best maps available—from National Geographic Atlas maps to the most detailed USGS topographic maps. Features include 3D views and fly-throughs, elevation profiling that allows you to draw a route and immediately calculate elevation gain or loss, and live map updating that lets you search for and download updated USGS quads. Customization options such as updated street overlays that can be toggled on or off, the ability to add your own notes and photos, and the option to choose from either lat/long or UTM grids let you create the perfect map for your activity. Compatible with most GPS receivers, including Garmin, Magellan, US GlobalSat, and Holux. Works on Macintosh or PC computers. For handheld devices, you will need the Pocket TOPO! addition, below. TOPO! Pro for ArcGIS. This is the professional program to easily integrate high-quality topographic maps, hillshades, and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) into your ArcGIS project. All TOPO! data layers are stored un-projected and referenced to Geographic NAD83, enabling ArcGIS to display them in any map projection of your choice. You are able to reference the topographic maps, hillshade, and Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) into your project as separate layers. Each layer can be toggled on and off separately so you can get the exact image you are looking for in your project or combine any of the three layers to create the exact map you need Also, the program is ArcPad compatible so you can use the TOPO! information in your mobile GIS and field mapping. TOPO! Xport Pro. TOPO! Xport Pro is a cost-effective solution to add the highest quality topographic maps to any CAD, GIS, cartographic, 3-D modeling, or GPS project that supports TIFF files. Export in several different file formats including GeoTIFF, TIFF, or JPEG with world headers in either the ESRI . TFW format or MapInfo .TAB format.
